……………………………………………………………. Altamira, MG 2013 Altamira is a rural village of the municipality of Nova União . It is located in the surroundings of the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, the capital city of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Being a small place, there is no map of the village. During the residency month at Mutuca (RAM) I collected drawings of local routes wich were made by the community. I then followed the paths to produce a topographic map representing the contour lines of the terrain. This drawing is made possible through the sensitive effort measured by my body while going up a slope, comparing it also with the topographic image. I acted as a cartographer, who has technical experience with urban mapping, capable of represent topography. All the trails were punctuated with found objects: plastic bags, rocks, leaves, brick, bones, industrial trash, etc. Each one was stamped in situ with the word “lote” (lot) and a serial number, according to its date and time of collection. Once I had the maps, followed its trails, and had drawn its contour map, it was possible to build a topography of all the inhabited Altamira. In studio, the drawings were changed into vector lines using AutoCAD, a software used for projecting structures, buildings and maps by architects, engineers and geographers. Then, the digital drawings were printed on decal films and transferred to white tiles. The final object is an unorthodox map shaped by the tiles’ standard dimensions. It’s also made up by some of the collected and stamped objects. Together they propose an Altamira model, aligning both technical knowledge and local experience. |
